cellar doors

above….the historic Sevenhill Cellars

The Clare Valley has well over 40 cellar doors: most are open seven days a week; however some only open weekends, and several only for a few months of the year. It’s near impossible to stay in the valley and not visit a few! The following link Clare Valley Cellar Doors should help. Cellar doors with beer  The valley may be known for its wine, but we have beer too! Pikes Wines have the Pikes Beer Company, and Jeanneret Wines have The Clare Valley Brewing Company.
Use this link to discover the many options.

eating out

One of the joys of staying at Thorn Park by the vines is the cuisine! Breakfast certainly sets you up for the day, and dinner is offered nightly at the exquisite 1830’s French walnut farmhouse table, including wines from the property’s extensive wine cellar. It is a ‘set’ menu, changes daily and utilizes fresh regional produce.

Dietary requirements and allergies can be accommodated; please advice when making a reservation.

Many cellar doors offer lunch or light meals. Mr Mick’s, Pike’s, Paulett’s , Reilly’s, Skillogalee, Shut the Gate and O’Leary Walker are some of the cellar doors who provide meals.

Local cafes and bakeries include Little Red Grape, Wild Saffron, Clare Rise Bakery, Watervale Store, The Olive Bus, Seed Espresso and the Café at Terroir.

When you need a night off from David’s cooking, Seed Wine House + Kitchen, Terroir at Auburn and Indii of Clare are the places to go.

Feeling like a pub? The Sevenhill Hotel, Watervale Hotel, Rising Sun (Auburn) or The Magpie & Stump (Mintaro) are our choices.

Directions for finding
Thorn Park by the vines

starting from Adelaide

The Clare Valley wine region starts at the village of Auburn (about 27 kms south of Clare); you then pass through Leasingham, Watervale, Penwortham and then finally Sevenhill. (Some of these villages have only a few houses).

After passing through Sevenhill, Quarry Road is the next road, if travelling north, on the right-hand side, (there is a very large tourism sign 100 metres before the T intersection). Turn right into Quarry Road and our property is exactly 1 kilometre along this road.

The road will pass under a little railway bridge (now part of the Riesling Trail), then meander past about 6 houses. Then the road turns sharply left up an incline. Almost immediately, there is a 20 Kilometre per hour sign, SLOW DOWN as our drive way is 100 metres further along on the left-hand side, at the crest of this small incline.

There is a small blue and white tourism sign saying, ‘Thorn Park’ on the right-hand side of the road, pointing to our driveway on the left had side.

Turn left off the bitumen road when you see that blue and white sign. Take the gravel road over the cattle grid, (there is a small brown and cream ‘Thorn Park sign on the fence, on your right).

Follow our internal road to the homestead. Guest car parking is in the carport attached to the shed.

Please note, if you are using a GPS, the address is sometimes shown as “Quarry Road, Spring Farm”; and not Clare; and to make life even more fun, under the new National Address system for emergencies, we are now Lot 109a Quarry Road Spring Town.

(The old lot number was lot 37 and often comes up as that on Google)….please use the Google maps link on the left for accurate directions.

Enjoying your time
in the Clare Valley

We are more than happy to spend time over breakfast helping you plan your day and making suggestions. However, below are some useful links.

Dietary requirements must be notified prior to arrival, and every endeavour will be made to accommodate them.

Thorn Park by the vines has an extensive wine cellar, mainly featuring wines from the Clare Valley and Kangaroo Island. Add to this, quality spirits and aperitif wines. All wines and beverages are included in the tariff.

Visitor information

The “Clare Valley, Wine, Food & Tourism Centre” is situated on the corner of the Horrocks Highway and Spring Gully Road Clare, opposite the local showgrounds. It acts as both the main tourism information centre, and as a showcase for the region’s food, wine and art. The Centre offers advice on the attractions in the area and sells an extensive range of local food products and wines.

On Friday evenings 5pm-7pm they host a happy hour, where guests can meet some of the locals, winemakers and other travellers.

Address; 8 Spring Gully Rd, Clare SA 5453
Phone number +61 8 8842 2131 or 1800 242 131

The Clare Valley website has all that you could hope for in planning your visit.

Cycling & Walking

The Riesling Trail was once the local train line: it was saved 20 years ago and is now a 35-kilometre cycling and walking trail. It adjoins the 20 Km southern Rattler Trail, so if you are feeling brave you can do the entire 55kms! The trail is only 500 metres from Thorn Park by the vines. There are several bike hire companies, so there is no need to pack your bike!
For full details please click here.

Farmers’ Markets

There is normally a farmers’ market held each weekend, however these are held in different towns in the region.

Heritage & History

Martindale Hall & Bungaree Station both give a peek at the early pastoral history of the Clare Valley & South Australia, both offering tours. Sevenhill Cellars was the earliest winery in the area and has many beautifully maintained buildings, and offers walking tours. There are several museums in the region….for more information about the region’s history click here.

art

The Clare Valley is home to many artist and crafts people. Amongst our favourites are Jen MacDonald’s Art Gallery & Studio, Medika Gallery, Blackman Gallery & Sue Barlow Jewellery…..click here for full information.
